The IRS recently announced a 6 year plan to update and modernize its information technology systems and infrastructure. The move will bring much needed resources to an agency beleaguered by nearly a decade of consecutive budget cuts. IRS updating systemsThe planned updates will primarily be in the areas of taxpayer experience, core taxpayer services, enforcement, cyber security and data protection. The IRS’s aim is to:

  • Standardize customer workflows
  • Reduce wait times through callback technology, online notices and live online customer support
  • Streamline the implementation of new tax provisions

The plan will be executed in 2 three-year phases and is estimated to cost between $2.3 – 2.7B and is projected to begin later this year. You can read more about the IRS's plan here.
