Ohio’s Minimum Wage and How This Change Could Affect Your Business

Beginning January 1, 2012, Ohio employers will start paying their employees $7.70 per hour (a 4% increase from the current minimum wage rate of $7.40), and tipped employees will be paid $3.85 per hour (also a 4% increase from the current rate of $3.70).  

In November of 2006, Ohio voters passed the Constitutional Amendment for Ohio’s minimum wage to increase on January 1st of each year by the rate of inflation, which is tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).  

The change effective on January 1st will apply to employers who gross over $283,000 per year (up from the current threshold of $271,000 per year).  For Ohio employers who gross under this limit, and/or who staff 14 and 15 year olds, the minimum wage is tied to the federal minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour, which will not change without an act of Congress.  For more information on Ohio’s minimum wage and how this change could affect your business, please contact us at (216)831-0733 to get in touch with the right Zinner professional.
