Staying Safe Online During The Holidays: A Guide for Everyone

by | 27 Jan | identity theft, scams

The holidays are a time for fun, gifts, and being with your family, as many people shop online, chat with friends, and share their holiday moments.

While the internet can be a great place for all this, it is important to stay safe, especially during the holiday season.

Here is a simple guide to help you and your family stay safe online this holiday season:

Shop on Safe Websites

If you are buying gifts online, make sure you are using safe websites. Look for a small lock symbol in the browser’s address bar, plus the web address should start with “https” (the “s” stands for secure). These are signs that the website is safe and your payment information is protected.

Tip: If the website looks strange, or if it offers deals that seem too good to be true, it is better not to use it. Stick to trusted stores.

Use Strong Passwords

Make sure your online accounts have strong passwords. A strong password is at least 8 characters long and has a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols (like @, #, or $). Avoid using easy-to-guess passwords like “password123” or your name.

Tip: Do not use the same password for every website. If it is hard to remember many passwords, you can write them down somewhere safe or use a password manager.

Be Careful with Emails and Messages

During the holidays, scammers send fake emails and messages pretending to be from stores or delivery companies. They might ask you to click on a link or share your personal information. Be careful!

Tip: If you get an email that looks suspicious, do not click on any links. Instead, go to the website directly by typing the address into your browser. Never share your personal information through email or text.

Do not Share Too Much on Social Media

It is fun to share pictures of your holidays but be careful about posting too much online. If you share your plans or where you are, it could make your home a target for burglars.

Tip: Only share your posts with people you know and wait until you are back home to share your travel photos.

Watch Out for Scams

Be on the lookout for scams, especially when people ask for money. Some scammers pretend to be charities around this time of the year. Always double-check before giving money, even if it sounds like a good cause.

Tip: If you want to donate, go to the charity’s official website to make sure it is real.

Keep Devices Updated

Make sure your computer, phone, and apps are up to date. Updates often include important security fixes that help protect you from hackers.

Tip: Turn on automatic updates, if possible. This way, you will always have the latest security features.

Use Public Wi-Fi Safely

If you are out shopping and using public Wi-Fi at a café or store, be careful. Public Wi-Fi networks are not always safe, and hackers can steal your information.

Tip: Avoid doing things like shopping or banking on public Wi-Fi. If you must, use a virtual private network (VPN) for extra protection.

Talk to Your Family

The holidays are a great time to remind your family about staying safe online. Talk to your kids or younger siblings about not sharing personal information with strangers online and help older family members spot scams.

The holiday season is meant for joy and celebration, but it is important to stay safe online. By following these simple tips, you can protect yourself and your family from scams, hackers, and other online dangers this Christmas. Stay smart, stay safe, and have a happy holidays!
