Family Business Conference Panelist: Chip Marous

by | 31 Oct | Business - Management, Issues & Concerns, Firm news

After starting Marous Brothers Construction Inc. in 1980, local businessman Chip Marous has achieved great success with his family owned and operated company for over 30 years. Chip is a scheduled panelist for a discussion on “ The Transition Process – Planning for the future” during the 2012 Family Business Conference, sponsored by Zinner & Co.

chip marousHow many people truly know what they want to do with their lives when they are still a teenager?

When Adelbert “Chip” Marous was just 19, he and his older brother Scott (age 23) started offering home remodeling and carpentry for small sized projects under the name Marous Brothers Construction Inc., a company that is still thriving 32 years later.

What started as a two-man operation has now expanded to 650 employees, who have worked on notable construction jobs such as Cleveland Browns Stadium, the African Elephant crossing at Cleveland MetroParks Zoo and the Central YMCA renovation in Cleveland, the company’s first $10 million project, which put them on the map in 1996.

The success of Marous Brothers can be attributed to its emphasis on family. Chip, Scott and their brother Ken serve as the company’s president, COO and vice president respectively, and the sons of Chip and Scott have formed a second generation of employees to carry on the Marous name.

But it is not just about the staff; the Marous brothers know that the key to business retention is the building strong relationships, so every client of the company is treated like family also. And with 90 percent of the firm’s work coming from repeat business or referrals, with some clients retained for over 25 years, it seems that the business model is definitely working in their favor.

Marous Brothers Construction has received countless awards and recognition over the years, both for the firm’s consistent quality workmanship and commitment to improving its community. In 2011, the firm was awarded The Pillar Award for Community Service by Smart Business for their overwhelming generosity, including 18,000 man hours spent completing a new home for a family in need for “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

As president of a successful business that is family owned and operated, Chip Marous knows how important it is to plan for the future succession of the company in order to ensure the value of Marous Brothers Construction Inc. is kept intact. Marous will be discussing this transition process as a featured panelist during the 2012 Smart Business Family Business Conference, sponsored by Zinner & Co, on Thursday, September 6.
